Day 1: Tuesday, October 10
Room 203

9:00 - 9:05 am

Welcome & Introduction

Presenter:

Carl G. Langenskiöld, President MEDIA-TECH Association
Bryan Ekus, Managing Director MEDIA-TECH Association

9:05 - 9:30 am

Greetings from the Chair / Future Optical Disc Technologies

Presenter:

Masud Mansuripur, University of Arizona

Synopsis:

Prof. Mansuripur will discuss R&D progress in various areas of optical data storage with emphasis on technologies that aim to reach beyond the capabilities of HD DVD and Blu-ray formats. Presently, near-field optical recording seems to be the front-runner in the race for fourth-generation optical storage products. Holography and various Multilayer schemes also appear to have a chance in the competition for fourth- and fifth-generation market share. We describe the fundamentals of the technologies currently under investigation in various laboratories worldwide, and offer a comparative analysis of their potentials and their shortfalls.

FVD & Following New Formats

Presenter:

Dr. Tzuan-Ren Jeng, Director of Data Storage System Division/EOL/ITRII, Taiwan

Synopsis:

A new optical disc format, called Forward Versatile Disc (FVD), using red laser for high definition content application, has been proposed in April of 2004 by Advanced Optical Storage Research Alliance (AOSRA) in Taiwan. FVD can present same high definition video quality as HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Several new physical technologies have been invented to increase stored capacity of FVD. For competing with next generation blue laser recording technologies, triple layer FVD disc with 15GB is developed by using special manufacture process. New copy protection, high efficiency sub-picture compression and navigation for FVD will be introduced in this paper.

Market Opportunities for Optical Disc Products

Presenter:

Wolfgang Schlichting, IDC

Synopsis:

Blue laser based optical drives and discs are getting closer to becoming mass market products. What are the killer consumer and professional applications for these devices? Next generation formats, HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc, compete to become the standard in consumer PCs. Is this the next "Beta vs. VHS" battle? Which format is likely to offer the best opportunities for media vendors? Or will we see DVD burners to remain a standard PC feature for many years to come? And what about holographic storage - could it become a competitor of next-generation DVD or will it target the professional archive market? Mr. Schlichting will present key trends for the optical storage market and point out growth strategies in the consumer and professional optical media markets.
