Dr. Jordi Ribas received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering (Systems) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1996. He worked in the advanced video processing laboratory at NTT, Yokosuka, Japan in 1994. From 1996 to 2000, he was with the digital video department at Sharp Labs of America, Camas, WA, USA. He joined Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA, USA in 2000, where he was a program manager in the Windows Media codec and DSP team until 2003, and led strategic projects in the Digital Media Division until 2006, including next generation DVD and Japan’s Windows business development. He is currently a senior director in the Consumer Media Technology group, where he manages Microsoft’s business unit working on HD DVD.

Dr. Ribas has contributed to the development of standards such as ISO/MPEG-4, ITU-T/H.264, SMPTE VC-1, and HD DVD, and in industry consortia such as MPEG-LA. He received the Young Investigator Award in the 1997 IS&T/SPIE International Conference on Visual Communications and Image Processing, and the Sharp Labs President’s Award in 1999. He has been awarded eleven patents and has eight pending.
