Mechatronic Design of a Universal 3rd Generation Mastering Industrial Solution
Dr. Jelm Franse, SINGULUS MASTERING BV

Abstract
The presentation and paper discusses the design and evaluation of the principal mechatronics of the SINGULUS 3rd generation LBR and the lay-out of the new in line Mastering system.

To provide customers with a reliable, robust, Mastering solution capable to deliver economically both HD-DVD and Blu-ray stampers, SINGULUS MASTERING is developing a new inline-mastering system.
The 3rd generation formats require increased equipment and process accuracy. This could only be reached using

  • Thermally induced Mastering (Phase Change Material) as opposed to using resist
  • Higher accuracy rotary and linear motion in the LBR
  • Better control of focus and intensity during mastering

Biography
Born in 1958, Dr. Jelm Franse holds a Masters degree in Metals Sciences and a PhD based on his work in Precision Engineering at Philips Research where he started to work in 1984. In 1991 he transferred to Philips Center for Manufacturing Technology. There, he became involved in different application fields of Mechatronics, serving initially as a group-leader, later as department manager and finally as Line of Business Manager and Vice President of Philips CFT.
