Conference

The MEDIA-TECH Conference is the renowned annual conference for the entire packaged media manufacturing industry and has become known for its broad program with well-thought presentations from international experts from the industry's leading format developers, equipment manufacturers, educators, consultants, and scientists.
[Day 1] 8.45 am | Start Conference | 9.00 am | Welcome MTA President/General Manager | Presenter: | Carl G. Langenskiöld, President MEDIA-TECH Association Bryan Ekus, Managing Director MEDIA-TECH Association | | | | | 9.15 am | Future Optical Disk Technologies
| Presenter: | Prof. Masud Mansuripur, University of Arizona | Synopsis: | We discuss R&D progress in various areas of optical data storage with emphasis on technologies that aim to reach beyond the capabilities of HD DVD and Blu-ray formats. Presently, near-field optical recording seems to be the front-runner in the race for fourth-generation optical storage products. Holography and various Multilayer schemes also appear to have a chance in the competition for fourth- and fifth-generation market share. We describe the fundamentals of the technologies currently under investigation in various laboratories worldwide, and offer a comparative analysis of their potentials and their shortfalls. | | | | | 9.30 am | "HDTV in Europe - from Vision to Reality" | Presenter: | Dieter Höhler, Thomson/Grass Valley | Synopsis: | Establishing a total HDTV environment from production to reception at the consumer requires a multitude of business decisions and investments throughout the complete chain. This includes the right technology and production infrastructure to enable production and transmission, but at the end the attractive content is the key for market success. The presentation focuses on the status of implementing the technology and production infrastructure in Europe and gives a short view on the development of HDTV broadcasting in Europe. |
| Download PDF of the presentation | | | | | | | 10.00 am | "Blu-ray Disc Technical Update" | Presenter: | Frank Simonis, Blu-ray Disc Association | Synopsis: | This presentation will provide a high level overview of the Blu-ray Disc format and technologies, the driving market forces behind high definition packaged media formats, format comparisons, and a roundup of current and near-term products. |
| Download PDF of the presentation | | | 10.30 am | Keynote "The Future of Digital Entertainment" | Presenter: | John Calkins, Sony Pictures | Synopsis: | In his keynote speech, John Calkins will explore new consumer and assorted media challenges as well as how new technology has historically been highly beneficial to film studios. In addition, the presentation will look at recent initiatives such as digital cinema and at what the future will hold for digital entertainment. | | | | | 11.00 am
| Coffee Break | | | | | 11.15 am | "HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc and the future of home entertainment in Europe" | Presenter: | Helen Davis Jayalath, Screen Digest | Synopsis: | Senior Video Analyst Helen Davis Jayalath will examine the potential market for high definition video formats. She will assess the performance of the competing formats to date, outline the key factors likely to drive adoption and predict the most likely outcome. |
| Download PDF of the presentation | | | | | | | 11.45 am | "RFID for Manufacture of Optical Media & Equipment: Realizing the ROI!" | Presenter: | Prof. Devendra Mishra, Pepperdine University | Synopsis: | While suppliers across the world are deploying RFID to meet mandates of Wal-Mart and mass merchants, more manufacturing companies are implementing the RFID technology to improve their operational processes with significant realizable ROI. Best practices will be presented from various industries, both process and product-oriented, to confirm the realization of lead time reduction, yield improvement, capacity and through-put increase, serial number control for product expiration management, inventory reduction and customer service enhancement. Case studies of Best of Breed in Europe will be discussed to identify proven technologies that can impact the optical media industry as well as its equipment manufacturers. |
