Future Optical Disk Technologies

Synopsis:

We discuss R&D progress in various areas of optical data storage with emphasis on technologies that aim to reach beyond the capabilities of HD DVD and Blu-ray formats. Presently, near-field optical recording seems to be the front-runner in the race for fourth-generation optical storage products. Holography and various Multilayer schemes also appear to have a chance in the competition for fourth- and fifth-generation market share. We describe the fundamentals of the technologies currently under investigation in various laboratories worldwide, and offer a comparative analysis of their potentials and their shortfalls.

The presentation focuses on the status of implementing the technology and production infrastructure in Europe and gives a short view on the development of HDTV broadcasting in Europe.

While suppliers across the world are deploying RFID to meet mandates of Wal-Mart and mass merchants, more manufacturing companies are implementing the RFID technology to improve their operational processes with significant realizable ROI. Best practices will be presented from various industries, both process and product-oriented, to confirm the realization of lead time reduction, yield improvement, capacity and through-put increase, serial number control for product expiration management, inventory reduction and customer service enhancement. Case studies of Best of Breed in Europe will be discussed to identify proven technologies that can impact the optical media industry as well as its equipment manufacturers.

Apart from QOL replication, QOL TECH has been created this year in order to propose a supply service of DVD / HD DVD and Blu-Ray matrix to European replication companies.
This is a first in Europe developed thanks to Singulus Technologies.
The aim of the Research and Development department, specialised in all types of optical media is to take an active part in developing the technologies linked to mastering, copy protection and disk traceability.
QOL is also holder of the AACS license.
